Thanks for visiting our pages! Got a Loughrey-related question? Comments about our site? We'd love to hear from you...and find out more about you. Just add a message or profile! (Please note: All posts to this guestbook are moderated, to prevent spammers from posting here. If your post doesn't appear immediately, please be patient - I'll try to get to it soon!) It would appear the Loughrey webpage is defunct, at least in terms of posting updates and especially with regard to responding to queries. I'm from DePue, IL, near Sheffield, and I'm trying to trace my Loughrey line through my g.g. grandmother Lucinah (Mills) Peterson, whose husband lars emmigrated from Denmark in 1857. Anybody out there listening? Larry Peterson <[email protected]> Gouldsboro, ME USA - Monday, August 20, 2012 at 00:06:41 (EDT) I am travelling to Ireland this month and hope to find some family. He came here in1888 accompanied by his sister Sara. (Susie) . His brother Joseph came a month before they did. They resided in New Haven CT. Big Jack and Joe worked on the railroad when the first arrived here. Joe met and married along the way and we would like to know more about him and his family. Big Jack married Maggie Creehan and they had four children. Alexis Margret Gena and John who moved to Boca RatonFl. where he was Fire Chief for many years. If you have any info we would love to hear from you. Linda Loughery Watson <[email protected]> West Palm Bch., Fl. I understand that much work went into this big tree, but I think that the 18th and nineteenth century portion of this big tree should be made freely available, because there should be no privacy concern for people born or married during the 18th and 19th century. I strongly encourage you to make this part of the big tree available, in the interest of all the other Loughreys who are to some extent descendants of some ancestor of your 18th century ancestor Michael Laughrea <[email protected]> Montreal, PQ Canada - Friday, May 18, 2012 at 18:34:31 (EDT) Here is a genealogy of a canadian Loughrey extended family. From ANDREW Loughry, my great great great grandfather, to the 52 known grandchildren (there must be more) of my great great grandfather PATRICK Loughry (1800-1886), who were born between 1843 and 1877. The 15 children of Patrick Loughry were born between 1826 and 1869. Any help in making this genealogy more complete would be appreciated. 1) X and Y had three sons: ANDREW Loughry, John Loughry, and Daniel Loughrea. a) ANDREW married Belle McCordick. Her father was James McCordick (1765-1859), buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Saratoga, NY. Her brother is John McCordick. b) John Loughry married Rosa Shanaghan. On Aug. 17 1833, a John Loughry receives land in Sorel. They had a daughter Bridget, who married Patrick Loonan on Sept. 12 1832 in Saint-François, Beauce (Saint-François was later renamed Beauceville). c) Daniel Loughrea married Ann Read. He obtained a concession in township of Golburn Persh Military Settlement, Ontario. He was a private, 99th regiment. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2) ANDREW Loughry and Belle McCordick had 7 sons: PATRICK (1800-1886), James, Thomas, Robert, William, Clark and Thurlow. a) James Laughrey married Elizabeth Anderson. They had three children: 1. James (1835-) was living in Leeds, Quebec, in 1881. 2. Elizabeth Laughrey (~1839-) married Owen Murphy on Oct. 7 1857 in Saint-Patrick's parish, Quebec City. Owen Murphy was mayor of Quebec City from 1874 to 1878 and member of parliament from 1886 to 1892. He was a also a director of the Quebec Central Railway. 3. Thomas Loughrey (1845-) was living in Leeds, Quebec, in 1881. b) Thomas Loughrey was living in York, Upper Canada in 1832. He was private, 18th regiment. c) Robert Loughrey arrived from Glasgow on the Saint-George, together with his two sons: Thomas (1842-) and James (1844-). d) William Loughrey (1812-) married Mary McCaffrey on April 23 1838 in Saint-Sylvestre Quebec. He had arrived in Saint-John, N.B. on April 18 1833, on board the 15th ship (Madawaska), which had departed from Londonderry, Northern Ireland. In 1866 he was in London Ontario. He was colonel sergeant, 7th regiment in 1866. e) Clark Loughry was corporal infantry company garrison duty in St-John Quebec (probably Saint-Jean sur le Richelieu), under captain James Chalmers. f) Thurlow Laughry married Mary Walsh in Victoria, B.C. They had a son named John. John married Blanche Veilleux on Oct. 18 1919 in Saint-François, Quebec. My grandfather John (1860-1946) was saying "Veilleux are family". g) PATRICK Loughry (1800-27 jan. 1886) had two wives: Mary Patton (~1805- Jan. 1 1854), buried in Saint-Elzéar, and Mary McGown (1820/1830-july 26 1904), whom he married in 1858. Mary McGown is buried in Saint-Matthew catholic cemetery on Dalton Road/route 142 near Whitefield, New Hampshire . Whitefield is 10 miles from Bethlehem, where her stepson Owen (1831-) lived in 1900. Since Mary McGown had her first child in 1852, and since she had 5 children between 1861 and 1869, I would bet that she was born in 1830 rather than 1820. PATRICK Loughry is buried in Saint-Séverin. He is thought to come from Omagh, Northern Ireland, according to my grandmother Lydia Cyr. As indicated in a previous article, the largest concentration of the Loughrey name in the world is found in Ulster; and in Ultser, their greatest concentration seems to be in Tyrone, where one finds Loughry College and Loughry house, where Jonathan Swift wrote "Gulliver's travels". Omagh is a central city of Tyrone. - - - - - - - - - - - 3) PATRICK Loughry (1800-1886) and Mary Patton (~1805-1854) had 9 children from 1826 to 1846: Bridget, James, Mary, Owen, Catherine, BERNARD, Michael, Ann and Patrick. Patrick Loughry (1800-1886). With Mary McGown, he had 6 children from 1858/1859 to 1869: Margaret, Peter, Helen, Joseph, Eliza and Frank. Before her marriage to Patrick, Mary McGown had three children from Jeremiah Mahoney: Mary (1852-), Martin (1853-) and Bridget (1856-). a) Bridget Loughrey (1826/1829-1883) married John Boyce (1817-1885) on April 26 1842 in Saint-Sylvestre. She died on Nov. 26 1883 in Saint-Elzéar. She had 11 children: 1. Marie (1844-1883). 2. Annie (1843-1930). 3. Michael (1846-) 4. Catherine (1848-1933). 5. Patrick (1849-1942). 6. John Owen (1851-1926). John Owen married Mary O'Connors on May 22 1883. He is the great grandfather of Thomas Boyce (1956-) from Vermont. 7. James (1855-1935). 8. Susan, or Big Susan (1856-1933). 9. Bridget (1859-1876). 10. Peter E. (1864-1922). 11. William H. (1865-1866). b) James Loughery (1826-1889) married Ann Gallagher (?-1883) on Feb. 22 1848 in Saint-Sylvestre. He moved to Whitefield, N.H. around 1875, a few years before his brother Owen moved to the same location. James died in Whitefield, New Hampshire on Dec. 9 1889. According to the tombstone, he was born in 1821. James and Ann had 8 children: 1. Mary (1850-1876). She married John Harny at Lévis on Sept. 16 1875 but died on April 10 1876. 2. James (1852-). He was born in Saint-Elzéar. 3. Patrick (1855-1885, d. Saint-Séverin). 4. Anne (1857-1880, d. Saint-Séverin) 5. Michael (1860-). He married Lizzie Longway on Sept. 21 1890 in Bartlett, N.H., in the White Mountain National Forest, near Whitefield. A Michael Laughery lived on Beech Hill Road, near the house of Owen Loughrea, in 1910, and a Michael Laughery lived in Lancaster N.H. in 1920. 6. Susan (1862-1936). She married Edward Gallagher in 1888 and died on Nov. 23 1936 in Saint-Sylvestre. 7. John (1865-1888, d. Saint-Séverin) 8. Bridget (1867/1868-1890, d. Whitefield, N.H.). She married Thomas Mulhebin and is buried near her father James in the Whitefield cemetery (there is a tombstone). c) Mary Laughery married John Harny on May 20 1851 in Saint-Elzéar. The farm of John Harny was adjacent to that of my great grandfather BERNARD (1834-1914). Both farms are in Leeds East, which eventually became part of Brougthon West, better known under the parish name of Saint-Pierre de Broughton. Together, the two farms occupy both sides of the beautiful East Palmer river. Mary Laughery had 3 children: 1. Patrick (1867-). Patrick Harny was mayor of Leeds-East from 1903-1908 and from 1919 to 1923. A Patrick Harny sold the farm of John Harny in 1945. 2. Thomas. Thomas Harny was president of the school commission in 1905. 3. Sara Ann (1876-1876). d) Owen Loughrea (1831- after 1910) married Margaret Mullavey (1838-1870, d. Saint-Patrice) on Aug. 25 1856 in Saint-Sylvestre, and Ann Aughery at an unknown date. Owen moved to New Hampshire in 1881. He had 5 chilren from Margaret and a son Daniel from Ann: 1. Patrick (1857-). Patrick was born in Saint-Sylvestre, married Isabella McGee and eventually moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin and then to Minnesota. I have the list of his descendants 2. Edward (1860-). I have the list of his descendants. Edward is the grandfather of Michael O. Loughrea, who was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin in 1947 and now lives in Topeka Kansas. 3. John (1868-). 4. Mary (1864-1866). 5. Michael (1870-1873). 6. Daniel (1872-). Daniel was born or got married in Saint-Patrice, and there was a Daniel Loughrea living in Merrimack County, Southern N.H. in 1900 (city: Franklin). There was a Daniel Loughrea living in Boston in 1917, at which date he was drafted for WWI. Daniel married Lizzie Maloney around 1879 and had a daughter Annie M. born on April 8 1897 in West Lebanon, N.H. e) Catherine Laughry (1833-). She married Thomas McGee in Saint-Elzéar on Nov. 6 1855, and had 10 children: 1. William (1859-). 2. James (1859-) 3. Susan (1860-). 4. Bridget (1863-) 5. Patrick (1865-) 6. Anny (1866-) 7. Michael (1868-) 8. Thomas (1870-) 9. Catherine (1872-). 10. John (1875-1926, Saint-Pierre de Broughton) f) BERNARD Laughrea married Cecilia Sullivan (1841-1901) on Nov. 23 1858 in Saint-Elzéar, 10 months after his father Patrick married for a second time, in Saint-Sylvestre, on January 26 1858. Bernard was Leeds East city councillor in 1893. The parents of Cecilia Sullivan are John Sullivan (1811-) and Mary Prendergast (1811-). The parents of John S. are Denis Sullivan and Margaret Dunn. Those of Mary Prendergast are Thomas or Patrick Prendergast and Margaret Walsh. Bernard and Cecilia had 9 children from 1860 to 1877. g) Ann Laughrey (1839-) married James Gould on July 26 1870 in Saint-Sylvestre. They had at least one child: Ann, born on Sept., 10 1873. James Gould donated land to build church in Saint-Séverin, and sold his farm on 21 Dec. 1874 or 14 august 1973. h) Michael (1841-1841). i) Patrick (1844/1846-1895). He died in Whitefield N.H. due to accidental drowning. j) Margaret (1859/1858-). There was a Margaret Loughrey living in Whitefield N.H. Cecilia Custeau visited "aunt Maggie" in Lancaster in 1945. k) Peter (1861-1941). He married Kate Gormley and had 4 children. A Peter Loughery lived on Brown street, Whitefield, N.H. for 30 years, and was buried on Aug. 20 1941 in Whitefield. N.H. 1. Annie (1899-). 2. William (1893-). 3. Allen (1898-). 4. He is my grandfather. He was married to Lydia Cyr in Broughton in 1906. He was president of the Leeds-East school board from 1910 to 1915. He had 3 children: Gérard (1914-1979), Lucille (1917-2009), and my father PATRICK (1920-1991). b) Patrick (1862-1954). He was city councillor. Bachelor; no children. BERNARD, Patrick and JOHN had adjacent farms on the hill between the East Palmer and the Palmer river. BERNARD settled there around 1875. JOHN sold his farm in 1929. For all of their declining years, the 3 bachelor brothers Pete, Pat and Tom lived together in the house builts by BERNARD, and extended by JOHN in 1890. I presume that Pete and Tom lived all their lifes there, starting in 1875. Without the extension, the house had a basement for food, 5 rooms on the first floor and 4 rooms on the second floor. c) Mary (1864-1948). She married a Kellow had at least one child. d) Michael (1866-1945). He married Elizabeht Castillo. He had 7 children (6 daughters and one son) and died in Lancaster (N.Y. or N.H.?). There is a Lancaster in N.H. which is the first town North of Whitefield-Bethlehem, where James Loughrey and Owen Loughrea lived. A Michael Laughrey lived there in a 1920 census. My father Patrick (1920-1991) wrote about "uncle Mike and Beatrice" in 1943. My uncle Gerard Laughrea (1914-1979) wrote on May 30 1945: "Beatrice et ses 2 filles ont été à Lancaster aujourd'hui pour mettre l'épitaphe de mon oncle Mike". Beatrice may be a daughter of Michael. e) Thomas (1868-1966). Bachelor; no children. f) Cecilia (1870-1963). She married James Custeau on Sept. 8 1894 in Saint-Pierre de Broughton, and had 7 children. I have the list of her children. g) James Laughrea (1873-1955). He married Josephine Sands and had 4 children. He has many desdendants in the USA. His great great granddaughter Ann-Marie moved back to Quebec. I have the list of all the descendants of James. All "Laughreas" in the world appear to be descendants of James (1873-1955) and John (1860-1946). The others spell the name differently. h) Peter (1875-1964). Bachelor; no children i) Ellen (1877-). She married Bartholemey McCaffrey on Sept. 30 1900. Michael Laughrea <[email protected]> Montreal, PQ Canada - Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 17:24:31 (EDT) My name is JENNIFER LOWERY. I live in Northern Illinois. I have long searched for genealogy links to my Lowery family, and can not find any leads. I assume the Lowery family (somewhere along the line) had changed their name, or possibly used another spelling. Now, searching through sites with other surnames (such as Loughery, Loughre, Laughrea, etc.) I am finding many Pennsylvania addresses. The little that I DO know about my Lowery family is as follows: My Paternal Great-Grandfather, George Edward Lowery had a son: My Grandfather, Eugene Lowery who was born in Philadelphia, PA. on or around 7 Sep 1919. He married my Grandmother, Margaret (Marge) Cathleen Zimmerman (adopted by a French woman and originally known as Mary Mutzabaug) who was born 17 Mar 1922. Marge died 14 May 1989 in El Cajon, CA. Eugene died Circa 1980 in Aurora, IL. Eugene and Marge had (6) six children: 1) Eugene Lowery b. Sept 1948 currently living in CA.; 2) Peggy Jean Lowery b. unknown (possibly 1949-1953?), but died around age 15-18 around the E. St. Louis, IL. area due to suffocation; 3) Robert Patrick Lowery b. 2 Mar, 19??, died in CA.; 4) Michael Joseph Lowery b. 30 Jun 1955 in E. St. Louis, IL. currently living in Eastport, Newfoundland, Canada; 5) Brian P. Lowery b. unknown, currently living in CA. 6) George Allen Lowery b. 25 Jul 1965, currently living in CA. ---My father is Michael Lowery (b. 30 Jun 1955). His father, Eugene, was rumored to be into boxing in Philadelphia. No one in the family knows more than this information about my Grandfather, Eugene, from Philadelphia or my Grandmother, Margaret, who was adopted. If anyone has any information or tips for finding genealogical links to my family tree, please e-mail me at: [email protected] ---ANY information will be greatly appreciated! Good luck to you in your search for your roots. Jennifer Lowery <[email protected]> IL USA - Wednesday, April 04, 2012 at 17:05:12 (EDT) Hi I'm from the Loughrey clan from W. His wife to be, Hester Charles, daughter of James Charles, also of Cookstown Tyrone, arrived in Melbourne on the "Marquis of Bute" on 30th November 1841. These were the first Loughreys in Australia and I suspect it is possible they were related to the Loughreys that settled in the US. I have been having fun looking up information on the Loughrey side of my family. Peter Loughrey was my 2 great grandfather and Margaret Carroll was his wife. I did some searching on the Carroll line and found links to a Wakefield family from Aughrim, Galway, Ireland. Searching on Aughrim, I discovered a town nearby called "Loughrea". I wonder if that is how the family name came into being. By the way, I always thought "Loughrey" meant "king's lake", but it refers to a "grey (riach) lake". Peter and Margaret's son, John married Caroline M. Walker whose parents were Daniel Walker and Betsey Lee Siles. I'm kind of stuck finding anything definitive about them. Can anyone help? Does anyone have any connection with Henry Loughery b c1770 Ireland who married Margaret Fowler? They may have had Londonderry connections as their daughter Jane (who married a James Mann) had 6 children born between 1828 and 1849, two of whom declared Co. Derry to have been their birthplace in later Scottish censuses. Drumachose CofI church has a baptism, George son of James and Jane, which if it is the same family would suggest a link with that area. Here is the basics of my story, Ellra Ungry, my 2 great grandfather was born in 1861 in Three Rivers, St. Joseph County, Michigan. When he was just a year old, his father Daniel Ungry was killed in the war. Which made him an only child. Ellra's mother, and her parents, (The Lowery's) left home and traveled through Missouri, and into Kansas. Some where along the way, Ellra's mother died. It seems like I might never find out who they were as there is no help on his birth record, and with out any first names for his grandparents to follow, and no census records show him on them. I really found him when he is older and married, in Coffey County Kansas, 1900 census, and he moved around a lot after that. My main intrest now is to find out who was his mother and grandparents, and to find out more about his childhood. So I have been just looking at a lot of Lowery info, till I find him. I can only assume that his grand parents died in Kansas somewhere, but I also assume that they didn't go there on a whim, I think they must have had family there. I hope some one here knows what I need, this seems to be a well used site. I hope I am a Loughrey. My mother recently passed away without finding any information about her biological relatives. In going through her paperwork we discovered Mom's original birth certificate, which reads: Father, Charles Laughrey - Mother, Dorothy Disbro; my mother's birth name was: Thelma Jean Laughrey (but was changed to Ruth Ellen Huslberg when she was adopted.) We found references to Charles Laughrey in other documents and his name is spelled 3 different ways: Lauthrey, Laughry, and Lauthrie. There is also mention of a Bulah Lauthrie. We believe that originally both the Lauthrey and Disbro families lived in southern Michigan, in the Bronson/Coldwater area. Any information would be helpful as we try to piece together this puzzle. I have flown to the west coast of both America and Canada, and driven to 29 states in the lower 48. I have made it a point to visit with as many *living* family members, as possible. My research is ongoing with public libraries, town and city offices, countless cemeteries, historical museums and societies, businesses and state treasury offices (for old payroll records), state archives, and various parishes of several denominations (though admittedly, mainly Catholic parishes). If you would like the names and connections of my family tree, my email address is: [email protected] I will direct you and invite you to my web site (the Boyce Family Tree) which includes an additional 4-5,000 Boyce family members. Not all will be directly related, but you will be pleased with the result and my penchant for primary source material (for proper verification purposes). Wow. This is an excellent resource to locate a line of family members I have, yet, to research. Are you really ready for this onslaught of long-lost family members? I know that *I* am ready and anxious to meet with you, all. They are Bridget (about 1824), Mary (about 1830-1833), Catharine (about 1833), Ann (1844), Margaret (1859), Helen (Elinor) (1863) and Eliza (Liza) (1869). Margaret, Helen and Eliza are half-sisters. Bridget married John (or Owen) Boyce on April 26 1842 in St-Sylvestre, Québec. Mary married Lewis Levis Cowan on May 20 1851 in St-Elzéar, Québec. Catharine married Thomas McGee on Nov. 6 1855 in St-Elzéar, Québec. Ann married James Gould on July 26 1870 in St-Sylvestre, Québec. Helen (Elinor) married James Monaghan on Coct. 25 1887 in St-Séverin, Québec. As far as we know, these sisters wrote their maiden name as either Laughry, Loughry, Laughrey, or Laughery, i.e. differently from their brothers Owen (Loughrea), Bernard (Laughrea) and James (Loughery on the tombstone). Regarding the 9 children of Bernard Laughrea, we would like to hear from the descendants of Mary (1864) and Michael (1866). Mary maried a Kellow. Michael married Elizabeth Castillo and had 7 children. We don't really know if they spelled their names Laughrea or not. We have a reasonbly good idea of the whereabouts of the descendants of the other children of Bernard. As far as we know all Laughreas in the world are descendants of Bernard Laughrea, via my grand-father John, forefather of most Canadian Laughreas and my grand-uncle James, forefather of most American Laughreas. In summary, Patrick Loughry (1801-1886) had 9 boys and 6 girls. His son James (1821 or 1826-1889) had 4 boys and 4 girls; his daughter Mary had 2 boys and 1 girl; his son Owen had 5 boys and 1 girl; his daughter Catherine had 10 children; his son Bernard (1834-1914) had 6 boys and 3 girls. Unfortunately, we don't know how many children were produced by the 11 other sons and daughters of Patrick (1801-1886). He had 36 grand-children from 4 of his 15 children. It is therefore plausible that our ancestor Patrick (1801-1886) had about 100 grand-children by 1920, and a vast number of grand-grand-children! michael laughrea <[email protected]> montreal, QWuébec Canada - Saturday, June 03, 2006 at 08:58:06 (EDT)
I would like to hear from descendants of James Loughery (1821 or 1826) and Anne (Nancy)Gallagher. They were married in 1848 in St-Sylvestre Quebec. They had 4 sons: James (1852), Patrick (1855), Michael (1860) and John (1865); and they had 4 daughters: Mary (1850), Anne (1857), Susan (1862), and Bridget (1868). James Loughery is buried in St-Matthews Catholic Cemetery, Dalton Road/route 142, just outside of Whitefield, N.H. He was buried on Dec 9 1889 at age 68, or 63. His daughter Bridget, married to Thomas Mulhebin, is buried next to him. She died Dec 6 1990. The Colonel's surname is actually Lochry, not Loughrey, as detailed in the Pennsylvania Archives and several other historical references. The creek named after him to commemorate the famous battle, is in fact a mis-spelling made at the time the creek was named in his memory, decades after the battle. A sampling of
history on the expedition can be found in: Chris McHenry, The Best Men of Westmoreland, An Historical Account of the Lochry Expedition, (Lawrenceburg, Indiana: publisher unkown, 1981). Includes a lengthy narrative of Westmoreland history leading to Lochry's Expedition. Also contains photographs of records known as the Haldimand Papers from the Canadian National Archives which list men captured from Lochry's Expedition and later imprisoned by the British at Prisoners Island, Coteau du Lac, Quebec, Canada. Also contains photographs of a list of Lochry's men from the diary Lt. Isaac Anderson. The original diary is held by the Cincinnati Historical Society. "Lochry's Expedition,"
Pennsylvania Archives, Sixth Series, Vol. II, Thomas Lynch Montgomery,
editor, (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: Harrisburg Publishing Company, 1906),
403-410. A further transcript Lt. Anderson's diary. Regards, I am also in the process of preparing a map which traces the route of the expedition and the later adventures of some of the survivors as they made their way back to Pennsylvania. My site is still under construction. Just getting back into genealogy again after a five-ish year break. Stephen

A son Hugh, who from the 1870 Phila. census lived with his mother, does appear at this time in the directories.....until April 10, 1886 when, a Hugh Loughery was buried at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church Cemetery in Manayunk, PA. I have unable to locate a obituary for Hugh, to verify that he is one of my Loughery's. I found a obituary for a Jane Loughery dated 1873, however I have yet to verify that she is the same Jane Loughery I am looking for as she is not buried at St. John's. Through birth & marriage records, I've been able to trace the spelling of my Loughery line name to Loughrey, that began with John D. Loughery's son, Joseph J. Loughrey. I am doing family research on my grandmother's side of the family. Wilma Lucille Loghry was born 8/5/1912 at Taylor, Nebraska. She was married to Edward Edgar Howard and had 5 children. Her father was Mark Heber Loghry and he was born 7/26/1872 near Fort Dodge, Iowa. His siblings were John, Walter, Thomas, Jennie, and Minnie. Mark was married to Jessie Mae Roe. At some point, they moved to Nebraska and then on to Wyoming along with 2 of his brothers. Mark's father was Joseph Loghry and he was born 5/10/1847 at New York. My grandmother would never talk about her past. A year ago, while visiting family grave sites, we came along a few Loghry tombstones and dont know how they are related. Tommie Ray Loghry died Feb. 27, 1984? 1884? 1814? hard to read the exact date J.B. Loghry born 1818 died 1888 Charlie W. The solicitation comes via e-mail, and masquerades as a plea to help transfer the estate of a deceased relative, engineer David Loughrey, out of South Africa. So if you receive any e-mail that begins, "I am Larry Ben(ESQ) a solicitor at law. I am the personal attorney to Engr.David loughrey, national of your country, who is an Engineer, a sole owner of ROLHB Construction Company in South Africa," PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't respond! If you do, you will be met with a request to provide your bank account information to facilitate the transfer, and once the scamming parties have your information, they will quickly try to *withdraw* funds, not deposit them. I know how much you Loughreys love to do good deeds on behalf of other Loughreys around the world (after all, that's why you're here!), but in this case, the Loughrey Family Association urges you *NOT* to comply with any such request you might receive. I like to do seaches on just the name Loughry sometimes and see what comes up. My earliest ancestor to come to this country is Jeremiah Loughry. There is a lot of differnt pronunciations of the name and many different spellings. The history of this issue is a concern for me. Personally I pronounce my name with emphasis on the "gh" as if it sounded like a K if sounded out smoothly. Like Lockery, although I beleive the Irish sounds it more like a strong GH. Whatever it is, I choose to pronounce my name Lockry, but I'd still like to know the exact origin of it. Reply if you like. James Edward Lockery, His father was Francis Ambrose Lockrey b-1824 in Whitefield, Maine. I have two questions. I have been told that Francis father was James who immigrated from Northern Ireland to Canada (with wife Katherine Johnston) and walked to Whitefield, Maine (because there was a large continent of Irish Catholics there). I have been to the whitefield cemetery and I have found a head stone for a James Loughrey with approx. the right dates for birth and death. Question 1) does it make sense that this Loughrey could have a son that would be called Lockrey? And question 2) I was told that my g-grandfather changed his spelling to Lockery to be more English-like for good employment during this time. I have seen lots of Lockery(s) from Ireland, over the Internet. Could the story I have been told been backwards? Janice True <[email protected]> Bethpage, NY USA - Monday, August 26, 2002 at 15:14:48 (EDT) G'day everyone, I am interested in the derivation of the surname Loughrey. There seems to be at least three possible origins of it's appearance in Ireland. (1) From Norman adventurers who followed Henry 11 into Ireland. DeLoughrey and DeLouriare said to have arrived in Ireland C.1177. The Normans were the first to introduce the use of surnames. (2) O'Luachra (or another Gaelic name) formed the beginnings of a clan of indigenous Celts with a phonetically identical surname. The anglicized form (corrupted when committed to the written word) aligned the group with Protestant objectives. Retaining a celtic name suggested you were Catholic and therefore you would be unpopular with the ruling British authorities. (3) The settlers (colonialists) of Northern Ireland, a mix of Scottish and Northern England immigrants, included a Lochery from the Lanarkshire region of Scotland. This possibility seems to be supported the apparently greater numbers of Loughreys (and variants) in the counties of Ulster up until the latter half of the nineteenth century. Can anyone provide information which would either support or eliminate one or more of these propositions - or perhaps offer an better theory? My great grandfather was a Loughrey from Londonderry, Ireland. He had six siblings (seven in total) and were all arranged to marry seven siblings with the last name of "Black". My great grandfather refused as he was in love with my great grandmother. He was, as a result, disowned by the family. This having happened, I can find no information on him at all. His name was Richard Loughrey. I am not sure about what year he came to Canada, but he had 5 children, Bill, Eva, Richard (my grandfather), Lily and Bob. I am still desperately looking for any info on this side of my tree.Hope this helps. The Lockery blockhouse discovery is a few miles up the road from where my family grew up and I still reside. The restoration has begun and should be completed 2002. Amazingly this original structure was found by Carl Eiseman, a local historian. (see Latrobe Historical Society.com for pictures and writeups. This blockhouse was originally scheduled to be relocated but will now stay in its original location as part of a low land refuge being establihed by the Arnold Palmer family. I have got back to the 1700's, when the Loughry family were strong in Cork, and Kilmacow (Co.Kilkenny), where they owned a farm and mill. If anybody is interested to know more or has any info, I will be glad to talk to them. Side bit of info, my family is littered with Dans and Jacks. Is this the same for anyone else? My mother Patricia, and also Gerald, Bobby and Hilary, then they moved to England around 1958. I am the youngest daughter of Patrick James Loughrey(deceased 1992)born April 1918 and the former Katherine Georgi. All I know about my father's family is his father's father's name was Edward and he was from Ireland and had five children: William Edward(my grandfather)and Patrick James, who were born in Ireland and came to the U.S. as children, Bertha,Nell, and Michael. I am not sure of their birth order or dates but I think my grandfather was the oldest. I think they were from Galway or somewhere in Northern Ireland-according to my mother. My Grandfather married Myrtle O'Dell date unknown. They also had five children:Edward,Patrick(my father,)Honora,Lynn and Laura. They are all deceased except Laura who lives in New York State. My father and his siblings grew up in New York in a town called Liberty I believe. My father married my mother on Dec.31,1940. They had six children:William born 1941,Katherine Patricia(called Patsy,)born 1943,Marie born 1944,June born 1952,Janet born 1954 and Gale(me)born 1960. My father moved us from New York State(upstate area near finger lakes)to Mesa,Arizona in 1965. John Loughrey was born in Ardraven, Buncrana, Co. Donegal, and he would be around 76 years of age in 2001. We have not see or heard from him in over 45 years, and he is now, if he still lives, my mother's only relative as far as we know. He worked for the New Zealand Shipping Company for a while, and then in a hotel somewhere in Maida Vale in London - If anyone out there has heard of him, or knows anything about him, or any family he may have we would love to hear from them. He had one other brother Paddy, who died about 15 years ago in Buncrana. I have been trying to research my mothers maiden name Loughrey. I stumbled upon this site and hope somebody can help. It is said that my great grandfather, Richard Loughrey was one of seven who were arranged to marry seven sisters with the last name of Black. He refused and was black sheeped. He was in love with mt great grandmother Elizebeth, last name unknown. Together they had 5 children, Bob, Lily, Richard (my grandfather) Bill and Eva. My grandfather was born in Londonderry, Ireland and married my grandmother Elizebeth Pendlebury. Does any of this sound familiar to anybody? I've collected a lot of information about Archibald's military career in Revolution and Indian wars, and much informnation about Lochry and related families in western PA (Westmoreland County)..my line is through Archibald's daughter Jane, then the Thompsons, then Paul family. The original log blockhouse/fort built by Archibald Lochry abt 1774 has just been discovered in very good condition on campus of St Vincent's college, Latrobe. Loghry <[email protected]> Duncan, OK USA - Thursday, August 10, 2000 at 23:22:24 (EDT) Hello, All Loughreys!!! It has been exciting exploring your website. There are a lot of Loughreys out there. I am the granddaughter of Earl Kellogg Loughrey and Ella Johnson Loughrey. My mother was Verna Julia Loughrey and she had an older brother Harry, a younger brother Arthur, a sister Ruth Irene and a brother Jay Irving who died as an infant. Verna was born in Lyle, Minnesota, June 21, 1903 and died June 3, 1999. She married David William Erickson, Jr. in Washington, D.C. on January 31, 1930. They had three children: David William III, born June 20, 1932; Mary Ellen (married name Jystad)born July 19, 1935; and Carolyn Ann born July 20, 1944. Verna's brother Harry was married twice and had three children, Eugune "Sonny", Marilyn, and Patricia. I believe that Earl's (my grandfather, born in 1856) was the son of a John Loughrey who was with the 1st Colorado Cavalry during the Civil War. Earl's mother was Caroline (Mundy?) Walker and was supposedly from Virginia. Mother (Verna) had a cousin Perry who traced the Peter Loughrey clan. It is my understanding that Peter would have been my great great grandfather and was born about 1832. I would be very interested in joining the family organization. Please send information to me at: Carolyn A. Erickson 3509 Winnetka Avenue North #220 New Hope, Minnesota 55427 Mother (Verna) had relatives in St. Paul that I met when her mother (Ella Johnson Loughrey) died in 1976. They were members of Perry Loughrey's family and included June Moe and Gaylord Loughrey, among others. I also met a cousin of Verna's from Willmar, MN, Ed Loughrey. He had a sister Geneva and a brother James. The family had a bakery and a coffee shop. Other Loughreys I am familiar with are Harry's daughter Marilyn, who's married name is Keller; his son, Gene; and grandson Edward Loughrey who is a lawyer in Seattle. Again, it has really been a treat to see the Loughrey name and I hope to hear from the family organization soon! After her husbands death, Jane continued to live in Manayunk, on English's Row. In 1875 she no longer appears in the Phila. city directories. The one book that would have been of great help in marriages and death after 1840, for the family, was stolen from the church rectory around 1935 when someone found information they didn't think should be known about their relative. I have information on John D. Loughery's (mine) family line. Through birth & marriage records, I've been able to trace the spelling of the Loughery name to Loughrey, that began with John D. Loughery's son, Joseph J. Loughrey. If you can make a match with any of this, I'd love to hear from you. A comprehensive family tree has been drawn up by a cousin and i will let him know about this site and get our story attached for all to see. By the way how do we join the Association? I would like to start a similar Association here and would like to here from anybody interested in doing so? Can I get that added to the website as a "news" item. Perhaps we could affiliate with your group. My business is running associations so setting it up is not a problem. Great site and great to see that their are lots of "cousins" out there. My cousin has been gracious and gave me information that goes back to 1840. I am a direct descendant of Michael Loughrey. He was born in Buaile Phaidin, Ireland in 1840. He had 15 children, I think 10 survived. Or at least I have ten of the names. Basically my family comes from Gort, Ireland. I know in my family I am related to Murrays, Lanes, and Naughtons. At least they were my grandmothers' maiden names. It is wild has that there is Southern and Northern Loughreys. I just wanted to say Hi to the fellow Loughreys out there. Liz Fuller <[email protected]> Los Angeles, CA USA - Friday, January 07, 2000 at 16:13:07 (EST) Hello to all of my loughrey family! I had sighned this guestbook a while back in search of my grandmother. Before I had no name and no location to where she was at and I really could not get any help. But now I have both. Her married name is Harriet Loughrey and her maiden name is Harriet Furgeson and I heard that she was living in Florida. It is one of my goals in life to meet my grandmother and to ask her how could she abandon her two daughters Patricia and Darlene when they were both just babies just because she met a white man with the last name Loughrey and he said "It's either those black kids or me." I believe also that I have an uncle out there by the name of either Dominique or Domingo Loughrey. It's not my mother's fault or my auntie Patricia's fault that my grandmother decided to have children with a black man, so how could she abandon them? I just want my grandmother to know that she has 11 beautiful BLACK grandchildren. 8 girls and 3 boys. The 3rd boy was just born from my auntie Patricia. If anyone can help me or knows of my grandmothers where abouts please sighn this guestbook with the information because I no longer have e-mail. I will be checking this guestbook everyday for a reply. Please note that my grandmothers name is Harriet Furgeson and she stays in the Florida area and she may be still holding her married name which is Loughrey even though her husband died. Thankyou. I went to High school with a Patricia Loughrey in Redding, CA in the 50sand have run into some Lockrys and Lockries as well. My research indicates that we all spring from the same Celtic Origins but that in order to confuse the britts and also because many of our ancesters were illiterate the spelling has been changed several times and many different names were derived from the same clanwhen our ancestors went from Scotland to northern Ireland to claim land from the Britts.
